According to Xing Lu, Chuang Tzu “used every artistic and rhetorical device at his disposal to communicate the Dao” (250). Chuang Tzu, also referred to as Zhuangzi, used language as a means of spreading the Dao. Despite viewing language as a limiting means of expression, Zhuangzi the rhetorician effectively employs figures of speech to describe situations which would potentially benefit from incorporating the Dao into one’s life. Chuang Tzu created metaphorical fables in his collection of stories, The Zhuangzi, relating stories of transformation and following nature in order to advance the ideals of the Daoists during the Warring States period.
